An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning.
An altered book artist takes a book and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, and other items along with at times other three-dimensional objects. You can change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art.
For me altered books are a way of bringing an old book back into the spotlight, by changing it into
a beautiful piece of art.
Each book that I carve, cut, or preform an autopsy on, is researched fully. It must be a book published before 1923, It must have some black and white art, and it needs to have the right feel.
I read the book and carefully photograph all the important details before it goes under the knife.
